Himalayan Dreams: The Story of Som Tamang is the remarkable story of how a child slave moved mountains to save a generation in Nepal. Som's life is a testament to the incredible strength of the human spirit, the enduring power of hope, and a singular purpose - to protect girls in Nepal from trafficking and child marriage. Be inspired by Som's journey as he overcomes extreme poverty, child slavery, a tiger attack, a critical head injury, civil war, and deadly earthquakes to carve out a brighter future for generations to come through education, and employment in the Himalayan trekking industry.

I first interviewed Som for ABC News in 2015, following the deadly Nepal earthquake on Anzac Day. Som also lives in Cairns, and runs humanitarian organisation Friends of Himalayan Children, female-focused trekking company Take on Nepal, and the fair trade shop Himalayan Dreams. I was struck by his sense of calm, compassion for his community and later, his story. I decided to write Som's biography after volunteering for a month as a journalism teacher in his village, Batase, 18 months after the school and his childrens' hostel were destroyed by the 2015 earthquakes. I could see the difference Som's work was making in the lives of these rural Nepalese children and I felt compelled to share it with the world.

In Himalayan Dreams: The Story of Som Tamang, you'll also read a little of my own story, those of other volunteers, and the stories of several young women whose lives have been set on a new and positive path through Som's intervention. I hope by reading this book, you are inspired to visit Nepal and support Som's humanitarian work in Batase.

“Every community suffers adversity, but not many suffer the adversity that the village of Batase in remote Nepal has faced for decades. Luckily, many communities have heroes. And so too does Batase. His name is Som Tamang. “Himalayan Dreams is the story of a man dedicated to changing the circumstances of those living in his home village, a story of empowering women, a story of using education to make a new future for all. Som didn’t have access to the education so many of us in Australia take for granted. With no school in his village, 10-year-old Tamang knew he’d have to travel to the city if he wanted to advance his lot in life. He also saw that women were treated differently. Girls would disappear from his village, and it wasn’t until he was older that he understood it was often because of being trafficked for the sex trade within urban Nepal and India. They either didn’t come back, or if they did, they were engulfed by shame. Education didn’t feature in their lives. Som has changed that for an entire generation of girls.

Ms Nancarrow’s book is a revelation.

Not only an inspiring story of an inspiring man, but also a story that is gripping, written with perspicacity that is infrequently seen. And that’s not even mentioning the devastating earthquake that tore the village of Batase apart in 2015. Not that it stopped Som’s work, of course. He’s a remarkable man, and it’s a remarkable book. Highly recommended."

"An eye opening story about women’s disadvantage in Nepal and how a small boy’s vision of equality for his sisters paired with determination and persistence changed the future for girls in the village of Batase. This book is an easy read, moving at a fast pace, and really hits home that one person can make a difference in this world. It is a reminder that even the most humble among us have the power to create change for a better world and that passion is contagious."

"This book has really shifted my perspective on the power of our dreams. I've always believed that with determination, we can achieve anything we set our minds to. But this book takes it a step further, showing how staying true to ourselves plays a crucial role in our journey. It's not about shutting out others; it's about embracing our true selves to unleash our potential and make a real impact. Som's story, and the support of his family, are truly remarkable. The changes he's brought about in Batase, especially in empowering girls and women through education, are indescribable. You have to read the book to truly understand the impact he's had and continues to have on the lives of others. Changing a culture is no small feat, and Som's consistent efforts has even created a new culture of initiative, inspiration, and resilience. I have immense respect for the author, Kirsty, as well as Som and everyone involved in transforming Batase with selfless passion and dedication. I feel compelled to support Som’s and Friends of Himalayan Children’s vision and mission. Kirsty poured her heart and soul into this work of art, and it's truly enlightening. I highly recommend this book, especially to young people who need inspiration to realise the power of their dreams. And to anyone who has lost faith in themselves, this book proves that you can still follow your dreams. Thank you, Kirsty, for sharing this inspiring story with the world."

"Kirsty has a background in reporting, and this shows in her attention to detail and getting the facts fully exposed from multiple view points. In saying this it is not dry, but has a timeline that is condensed so as it flows and gives you glimpses of what to will unfold later in the story, which keeps it engaging and want to continue reading, (well after bedtime). The ongoing story of what Som has achieved and continues to achieve, brings important issues such as child slavery, the sale of child brides and the power of education for both males and especially females, sharply into focus.
This is a feel-good story, that will open your eyes to the issues in Nepal, and how one person has made a huge difference. Just maybe at the end you will want to reach out and be part of this adventure by supporting Som's amazing work financially, or by taking a trek in Nepal guided by his male or female porters. This is a book that is hard to put down and will make your every-day problems melt into insignificance, and inspire you to greater things. A great investment."

DAVID BURSTON

"Kirsty Nancarrow has captured the true spirit of Som Tamang in this fantastic and inspirational story.
Som’s story re-enforces the old clichés of “one man can change the world” and “never give up on your dreams”.
Som has not just changed but also saved many lives in Nepal via education and opportunity, particularly saving many young girls from sex trafficking, slavery and child marriage.
Along the way Kirsty shares personal insights into her own life journey which adds to the honest and genuineness she brings to her writing. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for an inspirational message of hope and an insight into lives so different to what we know here in ‘The Lucky Country’."

It's an incredible read that you simply mustn't miss out on. Kirsty paints a poignant portrait of Som Tamang 's remarkable journey, highlighting the transformative power of determination, perseverance, and compassion. The book is truly enlightening; despite knowing Som personally for years, it unveiled layers of his humble yet impactful endeavors in his community that I hadn't fully grasped before. Kirsty's storytelling talent shines as she led me through the highs and lows of Som's journey, making the book a real page turner. What truly distinguishes "Himalayan Dreams" is its ability to inspire. Som's story serves as a guiding light, reminding us of the profound ripple effect that one individual, fuelled by passion and driven by a desire for positive change, can create. A must read for all.

“Himalayan Dreams has opened my eyes to another world - the small village of Batase, high up in the Himalayas and a small boy whose sheer willpower and determination to make life easier for those coming behind him, especially girls who were and still are subjected to child trafficking (often marrying as young as 13.) I look at my daughter and the thought of her having to marry and bear children at her age, still a child, is harrowing. Kirsty, you have done an outstanding job telling Som’s story. "
